Say Goodbye to Oily Skin

April 2, 2015

Milk of Magnesia

Last week I wrote this Beauty Haul post and asked if anyone knew of a good primer for oily skin. Marae from The Always Fabulous recommended Milk of Magnesia as a skin primer. If you’re not familiar with this product it is typically used for occasional constipation. I found this article and watched a slew of YouTube videos for application techniques.

It should be noted that I have tried countless skincare products and have not found anything to keep my oily skin at bay. If you have dry or combination skin this product may cause issues with dryness and tightening of the skin. It should only be used on oily skin.

With a foundation brush I applied a thin layer over my entire face around 6:30 am. I let it dry for about 5 minutes. Once set, a white residue appeared on my face. This is normal. I then proceeded to apply my foundation using a foundation brush and finished with powder.

The end results was a gorgeous porcelain matte finish. Twelve hours later I was still shine free! I did have a glimmer of shine on the top of my nose, but other then that my makeup still appeared fresh. I can’t believe I’ve gone through life without this product. It is 100% amazing!

Check out this fun video for a product review and tips on application.

The thoughts on this product are 50/50 – it definitely helps keep your makeup on and eliminate oil, which is great for that benefit… but it is actually changing the PH level of your skin and is actually bad (long term) for your skin. As a makeup artist I know the importance of keeping a matte look for clients but there are some other alternatives like the new Makeup Forever Matte primer, Hourglass primer, or the Smashbox AntiShine. If you use Milk of Magnesia occasionally for special occasions, It shouldn’t be too terrible, but that is NOT for everyday use or you will change your skin composition creating a softening of the skin tissue, increased risk of contact dermititus and acne due to bacterial proliferation. Please check out other options first!

Thanks Alyssa for your comment and sharing your concerns. I will add an addendum to the note at the bottom of this post. I have tried other primers but still am unable to find one that works. I have the Smashbox antishine and that one didn’t work for me. I am concerned about the Hourglass one because it has SPF in it and that can make the skin more oily. I will give the makeup forever one a try. If you have other primer recommendations for oily skin let me know. Thanks again.
