How to Find the Perfect Red Lipstick for Your Complexion

October 1, 2015

Lace & Pearls Makeup

So I’m kind of obsessed with the idea of wearing red lipstick. I have never worn this color before, but I want to give it a try. Finding the perfect red lipstick for your complexion can be more challenging then you would expect.

Find Your Perfect Shade

Tip: Dab a color on your finger tips and hold them up to your lips instead of applying the color to the underside of your hand or take a selfie to determine what color works best for you. If the photo looks off, keep looking until you find something in a more flattering hue.

Tip: If you want to make a statement go for the cool tones (blue/pink-based red lipstick). If want to be in harmony, go for a warm tone (orange-based red lipstick).

Skin Tone Range

  • Fair (light-beige): If your skin is fair, go for reds with a touch of orange, somewhere between tomato red and coral red. Deep reds with a blue tone can appear harsh.
  • Medium (tan- milk chocolate): Choose a shade that compliments both the orange and the red. Both colors will work well on you.
  • Dark (dark chocolate): Cool reds, devoid of orange undertones, are the most flattering. Look for reds with blue undertones.

My skin tone falls in the medium range so I can wear orange-based reds or red-reds.

I hope you found these tips helpful, but regardless of the rules, wear what feels right.

Yay for red lipstick! Those look great on you. My favorite red of all time is Hourglass Icon. It’s a super deep, blue-red that looks incredibly dramatic and sexy. I love it!

I really like Rimmel’s Bordeaux (a deep burgundy red) and Nars Cruella ( a truer red) on me!

Lol! I’m no beauty expert but maybe I could help. Mil from South by Northwest is the beauty queen, she knows everything about makeup. She will most likely be more helpful, but I’m always down for a Sephora trip. 😀
