Juggling a Day Job, Blog, and Jewelry Business

August 21, 2018

With a 9-5, fashion blog, and newly established jewelry business, I'm often asked how I manage. The truth is...I just make it work. The truth is…I just make it work, even if that means sacrificing my house (it seriously looks like a cyclone went through it), sleep deprivation, and a neglected husband. These things are terrible, I know, but I want to be completely honest. I’m hoping to correct these bad habits over time and at the top of my list right now is to spend more time with my husband. So important!

I currently work as a project manager in healthcare. I majored in communications and made a lateral move to the healthcare industry after working in fashion for 10 years. You can read more about my career path in this post.

Since the uptick in my jewelry business and blog, I have found it increasingly difficult to stay engaged and focused at work. Really, all of the things that used to keep my attention no longer interest me like tv, books, and sometimes even my favorite podcast! I feel like my mind is always buzzing with the next task or idea and it’s hard to stay in the moment.

Juggling a Blog

Running a blog requires that you wear a lot of hats. I’m a stylist, marketer, social media guru, writer, and a businesswoman who has to negotiate contracts with brands. It can take up to 10 hours to create one blog post and promote it across social platforms. Read this post to learn more about blogging and my top 4 tips.

This blog will be 4 years old on October 6th, but with the jewelry business, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to keep the momentum.  My mom constantly tells me that something will eventually give, but I cringe at the thought. In a perfect world, I would do the jewelry and blog and only work part-time at my day job (gotta keep those benefits!).

Lace & Pearls Jewelry has been open since October of 2017 and has had quite the year! I can’t believe all that I’ve accomplished in such a short amount of time. I’m not going to lie, the learning curve has been a bit treacherous. Hello quarterly and annual taxes, business licenses, and pricing structure. Oh, and making the jewelry; it is time-consuming, but also really fun!

Since the launch, I have accomplished a lot. Here are some fun stats:

  • 6 shows + 4 more scheduled
  • 1 wholesale account/stockist
  • 109 orders

I hope this gives you an idea of what my life has been like lately and answers some of your questions. Feel free to leave a comment or shoot me an email if I missed anything. Thanks so much for reading!
