I don’t typically focus on seasonal trends, but with the buzz of New York Fashion Week and fall approaching, what better time than now to familiarize myself with some of the upcoming looks for 2018? After scrolling through a handful of looks – pantsuits, the resurgence of the 80s, and leopard print everything – I came across western wear and thought this would be an easy trend to focus on, especially since most of the pieces can already be found in your closet or easily thrifted.
Fall Fashion Trend: The Western Frontier
What is the western frontier aka the new frontier? It’s really a mash-up of prairie styles (think Westworld) and old-fashioned western styles like cowboy boots and shirts. I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that most of your boho items, floral dresses, fringe bags, and peasant blouses could easily be outfitted to channel your inner pioneer woman!
What I like about this trend is you can be subtle or over the top! If you’re like me, you’ll prefer a more understated look. I went with an on-trend, peasant-style blouse (my boho piece) but kept my bottom modern. If you wanted to be more fashion-forward, you could swap out the bottoms for a denim skirt and cowboy boots. Add a fringe bag and you’re definitely giving a nod to the prairie girl. I also like how this trend is super girly and love the idea of winter florals and flowy blouses.
You Might Already Own What You Need
The best thing about this trend is it’s easy to incorporate into your current wardrobe like I did with my peasant blouse. You probably already own some of the key staples too! Take the cowboy boot; if you don’t have a pair you could always opt for a pair of riding boots. Other items you might find in your closet are chambray shirts, denim skirts, floral dresses, and tops. If you don’t have some of these items, you can thrift them or stop by your local Forever 21, Zara, or Target.
On the shoe front, I am seeing lots of booties in fun colors and textures. Most of them have a western shape that works well with skirts, dresses, and pants.
The only thing I couldn’t find much for was the accessories. This might be because during that time women didn’t wear much jewelry. I would probably lean towards going more minimal with your pieces, hence the gold accents I incorporated in today’s look. I also like the idea of leather earrings and wooden or oversized bangles.
