What to Wear to a Holiday Family Gathering

December 3, 2018

If your holiday family gatherings are anything like mine, then you probably keep things super casual and laid back. I typically wear my most comfortable sweater and a pair of jeans, especially when food is involved. (And when is food not a factor for a holiday gathering?)maurices graciously sponsored this Instagram post, but I fell in love with the brand and chose to write a full blog post. All opinions shared here are my own. Thank you, maurices for gifting me the clothing and accessories in this post.

How to Wear Velvet in Real Life

December 27, 2017

Velvet is one of those fabrics that people either love or hate. I hear things like "That looks like something my grandma would wear," and "Do you remember when I had a similar top? You were a lot younger so you probably don't remember."Velvet is one of those fabrics that people either love or hate. I hear things like “That looks like something my grandma would wear,” and “Do you remember when I had a similar top? You were a lot younger so you probably don’t remember.” I don’t know about you, but I’m a bit old school and love a more classic look, so I don’t really have a negative view when it comes to velvet. I do, however, think of the Victorian era or my mom’s burgundy velvet chaise lounge from back in the day.

Velvet is one of those fabrics that people either love or hate. I hear things like "That looks like something my grandma would wear," and "Do you remember when I had a similar top? I hear things like "That looks like something my grandma would wear," and "Do you remember when I had a similar top? You were a lot younger so you probably don't remember."Nowadays, velvet has really become modernized. I see it in every available option, from skirts and dresses to handbags and boots! Plus, there are a lot of affordable options and if you’re not comfortable fully embracing this luxurious fabric you can easily do an accessory and call it a day.

What I like about today’s look is that it’s a pretty simple outfit: black denim, Chelsea boots, and a crushed velvet top. I’m obsessed with the burgundy color and love the pleats.  So girly and feminine!

Choose something you would actually wear. If you are scared to go all out, try something subtle like a velvet ribbon in your hair, a cute choker, or a clutch. I also love the element of surprise like a sock bootie.

Pick a color that mixes well with others. I’m a big fan of color, but if you aren’t, go for something more subtle. Black is a no-brainer and easy to style. Darker tones like navy and green work great too.

Don’t overdo it. A little goes a long way! Choose one item to wear: top, dress, skirt, pant, or blazer. I would also avoid head-to-toe velvet, unless you like to go all out of course!

Wear it with a classic. Still struggling with how to style? Wear your velvet with one of your favorite closet staples. Take the chambray shirt for example. It would look great paired with a velvet skirt! Or you can always wear a velvet jacket over a simple white tee.

What velvet pieces are you planning to incorporate into your wardrobe this winter? Share in the comments.

Dress up your Little Black Dress this Holiday Season

December 21, 2017

I love a great closet staple as much as the next girl, but it took me years before I purchased a Little Black Dress. Shocker, I know! I'm just not the biggest fan of black. In fact, when I started this blog back in 2014, I refused to wear it at all! I just didn't like it on me and prefer softer color palettes. In the workplace, it's encouraged to dress business casual so after wearing black pants throughout the years, I eventually got up the nerve to venture out of my comfort zone and purchase black in other items. Plus, I would always see cute tops and other clothing in black but wouldn't buy them if they weren't offered in another color. Does anyone else relate?I love a great closet staple as much as the next girl, but it took me years before I purchased a Little Black Dress. Shocker, I know! I’m just not the biggest fan of black. Whenever a special occasion is on the rise and you need to look right, reach for your classic LBD! Just because you’re wearing black, that doesn’t mean that you have to dress boring. The sky is the limit, so use today’s photos and tips to help you perfect your LBD.

Choose the Dress: I have seen so many gorgeous black dresses this holiday. When looking for the perfect one, I recommend choosing something with a bit of texture. That can be anything from lace to brocade. This alone can make your dress stand out from the norm and make it easier to dress down for a non-formal occasion. Don’t you love a little versatility when it comes to your clothing choices?

Does anyone else relate? The Topper: The dress is the foundation or canvas of your look, so once that has been decided upon, choose your outerwear, scarf, or shawl option. Be creative and think colorful or textured or both! A nice print would look great, or even faux fur. I recently saw this look from M Loves M loved how she paired her faux fur toggle jacket with her LBD. The pink bow pumps were an added bonus.

Shoes: Definitely go for a color or something sparkly for a non-formal event. I also like a printed pump or flat. So cute! If you are aching to stay warm, go for a riding or OTK (over the knee) boot. Other cute options could be a traditional bootie or Chelsea boot like the ones I’m wearing. If you’re a trendsetter, try the popular sock boot.

Accessories: You can go simple or over the top. I’ve been loving my black clutch lately and it has really come in handy for daily wear and special events. Check out last week’s post for a ton of cute clutch options in the shopping widget. Statement jewelry is always fun for the holidays and a nice way to elevate your look. If you’re not a necklace or bracelet person, go for a statement cocktail ring or even a pair of earrings. Find something that embodies your personal style and wear it with confidence!

Makeup: I love false lashes but always struggle to apply them. I usually ask my husband for help (lol) or a friend. If this sounds like you, check out this video. It’s genius! I really wish I saw this years ago. She makes applying lashes a cinch!

A Versatile Holiday Outfit + Where to Shop

December 12, 2017

Instead of investing in a coat, consider a fur vest or scarf. For the next couple of weeks, I will be sharing several holiday-inspired looks. Funny enough, it’s been a long time since I’ve attended a holiday soiree. It’s for this very reason that I recommend not overspending when looking for your holiday outfit and purchasing items that can work long after the holidays.

Fashion Tip: When shopping for your holiday attire, think functional. Take the faux fur coat for example. Instead of investing in a coat, consider a fur vest or scarf to throw over a dress or skirt. Both options can be worn after the holidays with jeans or a more casual look.

A Versatile Holiday Outfit + Where to Shop

Dress: Velour is apparently back in style! I can’t help but think of the infamous Juicy tracksuit and my husband’s snide comment “ain’t no one wearing velour!”, but this dress is surprisingly super cute AND has pockets. The length is perfect and I love the burgundy color. The fabric is also really soft and comfortable. I love how you can manage to still look cute and be semi-warm.

Fashion Tip: When shopping for a holiday dress, go for an LBD (little black dress), or something in a wine or burgundy color. Both colors are great for the holidays, but can be worn on other occasions too. Red is also good depending on the style. Look for a more versatile frock rather than one that screams Christmas, unless that’s what you’re going for then, by all means, do you!

When shopping for your holiday outfit, think functional. Take the faux fur coat for example. Instead of investing in a coat, consider a fur vest or scarf.Boots: I needed a casual holiday shoe since I live in Seattle and the weather is unpredictable. I opted for these bronze boots that I’m obsessed with and can wear all winter long. They look super cute with a dress. Bonus points that they’re a comfort shoe and are available in a wide range of sizes.

Accessories:  If you want to purchase something that is more on the festive side, I recommend buying a statement necklace or purse. You can get these type of things at a lower price that won’t break the bank. This necklace is perfect for the holidays and inexpensive. The black clutch is not festive, but I have literally worn it with everything from an LBD to jeans. Look at places like Charming Charlie, DSW, Target, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and even Forever21 for inexpensive options.

Create a Casual Holiday Outfit in 4 Easy Steps

Keep reading for some simple tips on how to create a casual holiday outfit.

Today’s outfit is not festive, but with a few changes it has the potential. To get started, I recommend a few items. Most if not all of these pieces you will already own or can pick up at the store.

Casual Holiday Outfit Essentials

  1. Clutch. Instead of carrying a cross body bag, I would opt for a clutch. Clutches are a great way to dress up your look. If you’re looking for a clutch I would check out Nordstrom, Target, and DSW. I found a simple black clutch at DSW that will work for most occasions.
  2. Heels. A heel makes everything look good: jean, pants, dress or skirt. Not to mentioned a great confidence booster! Walking around in a pair of pumps will take a casual look to the next level. If you’re more of a flats girl, opt for a pair that is sparkly (it’s the holidays after all) or one with a bow.
  3. Bright lip. If you’re a long-term reader, you know that I always recommend wearing lipstick. It’s an inexpensive way to look polished and brighten up your look. In today’s post, I went for a darker lip, but if I were to attend a holiday party I would wear red. If you’re hesitant to wear a bright lip, try an orange-red or one with blue undertones. A burgundy or bright pink would also look nice.
  4. Statement earring, necklace, or brooch. I love jewelry, especially during the holidays. Depending on your style, go for a festive statement piece. For this look I would wear a sparkly brooch to dress up the simple top. If I wore my hair up, I would do a statement earring.

The Finishing Touch – Something Glam

For your final piece, go for the glam! I recommend any of the below items to take your look up a notch. If you’re looking for a more subtle statement, lace is always a good option. Oh, and nail polish. Do something sparkly, bright, or both.

  • False lash. Lashes are so much fun. Check out this holiday beauty post for some inspiration.
  • Sequins. Doesn’t need much of an explanation and there are so many options to choose from. For a fun take on this never-ending trend, choose your sparkle in a color. Pink, anyone? Then remix for New Years.
  • Faux Fur. You could throw on a fur stole (like the one I wore in this post) or vest. Both are festive and you can wear them many times throughout the season. Plus, it a great way to stay warm.

Top: Loft (similar) |Necklace: Nadri (similar)| Midi Ring: Pretty Particular c/o (use code laceandpearls to receive 20% off your order) | Denim: Treasure and Bound (now on sale!)| Heels: Paul Green | Purse: Marc by Marc Jacobs (similar) via thredUp | Lipstick: Wet n Wild (Mocha-licious)
